Dr. Albert Kingsbury invented the tilting-pad hydrodynamic thrust bearing in 1912 and, from there, built a company and a legacy that continues today under the stewardship of the Kingsbury family.

The workplace culture of Kingsbury is one that values the individual and not just the work. This focus applies to both the individual employee and the customer, and is reflective of the core beliefs of ownership and management. As a member of the Kingsbury team, you will experience a supportive and collaborative environment with a continuous improvement mindset. Kingsbury and its products hold an unequaled reputation across the globe for technical leadership and unsurpassed excellence and quality. Ownership, employees, and customers are all proud to say, “I’m with Kingsbury”.

What We Do

Dr. Kingsbury’s patented tilting-pad, fluid-film bearing, first installed at Holtwood Generating station in Pennsylvania in 1912, permitted the design of larger, more heavily loaded hydroturbine-generators, such as those operating at Hoover Dam and hundreds of other installations world-wide. In 1987, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers awarded the International Historical Landmark Award to Dr. Kingsbury’s invention, an achievement in a league with other esteemed recipients, such as Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone and the Saturn V rocket.

The spirit of ingenuity and excellence in engineering initiated by Dr. Albert Kingsbury has remained the cornerstone of what Kingsbury strives to provide the world. Kingsbury thrust and journal bearings, from large, heavily loaded bearings over 100-inches in diameter for hydro-turbines; to small, very high speed bearings for carbon-capture compressors, are designed, tested, and manufactured to allow machine builders to extend the size, load, and speed of the equipment they build. This results in better, more efficient machines and processes, providing a positive, global impact.

Today, Kingsbury bearings support and enable efficient machinery operations in applications for power generation, oil & gas, marine propulsion, and dozens of other heavy industrial rotating equipment applications. Kingsbury proudly provides main propulsion and various support systems bearings to the U.S. Navy, for whom we have been a key supplier for over 100 years. Kingsbury’s Messinger Bearing product line offers specialty rolling element bearings for various industrial and defense applications. Kingsbury operates a continuously staffed R&D laboratory which tests and develops bearing designs and is the basis for our ability to very accurately predict performance and provide troubleshooting and other application assistance for our customers. We offer life-cycle support over the decades of use of our products and can provide engineering and service expertise to support product in the field. Kingsbury is actively conducting research and development, along with leading laboratories, OEMs, end-users, and universities, to provide bearings to enable very large offshore wind turbines and other environmentally focused cleaner-energy processes. Kingsbury is excited about the transitions taking place globally in the fuel and energy markets and is committed to being a leader in enabling the required technology and innovations addressing climate concerns.

Meet Eve Clulow, Chairman of the Board

Kingsbury’s current Chairman of the Board, appointed in July 2018, is Ms. Eve Clulow, great-granddaughter of the company’s founder, Dr. Albert Kingsbury. Eve’s grandfather, businessman Quinto Maganini, succeeded Albert Kingsbury as the company’s second president from 1943 until 1974. Eve’s mother, Margaretta Maganini Clulow, served as Chairman of the Board from 1975 until 2006, when Dr. Joseph Hill (cousin-in-law to Eve) assumed the title.

One might say that Kingsbury, Inc. was Eve’s destiny from a young age. As a child, Eve often accompanied her mother to Kingsbury’s Philadelphia headquarters for board meetings and got to know many of the employees, several of whom are still with the company today. It was only a matter of time (1991, to be exact) before she joined the board of directors. Eve served as a board member for 27 years before being elected to her current position as Chairman.

"My time at Kingsbury was a memorable and positive experience, and everyone I worked with made me feel welcomed. I was able to participate in a mix of hands-on work with tools and machining, R&D projects (ANSYS, test rig equipment research), and QC tasks while working with some great people. I got to see how each department interacts and the processes that go into manufacturing and fixing bearings. I enjoyed working here and would have liked to extend my internship had it not been for school commitments.

I had a great time working in the tool room and with QA at Kingsbury. It was a welcoming environment."

“I had a great time working at Kingsbury. From the R&D team I worked with to machinists on the floor that I barely knew everyone was friendly and helpful. The work in R&D is engaging and I learned a lot about Kingsbury's bearings and the machines that test them.”
