Dr. Albert Kingsbury invented the tilting-pad hydrodynamic thrust bearing in 1912 and, from there, built a company and a legacy
that continues today under the stewardship of the Kingsbury family.
The workplace culture of Kingsbury is one that values the individual and not just the work. This focus applies to both the individual employee and the customer, and is reflective of the core beliefs of ownership and management. As a member of the Kingsbury team, you will experience a supportive and collaborative environment with a continuous improvement mindset. Kingsbury and its products hold an unequaled reputation across the globe for technical leadership and unsurpassed excellence and quality. Ownership, employees, and customers are all proud to say, “I’m with Kingsbury”.
Dr. Kingsbury’s patented tilting-pad, fluid-film bearing, first installed at Holtwood Generating station in
Pennsylvania in 1912, permitted the design of larger, more heavily loaded hydroturbine-generators, such as those
operating at Hoover Dam and hundreds of other installations world-wide. In 1987, the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers awarded the International Historical Landmark Award to Dr. Kingsbury’s invention, an
achievement in a league with other esteemed recipients, such as Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone and the Saturn V
The spirit of ingenuity and excellence in engineering initiated by Albert Kingsbury has remained the cornerstone of what Kingsbury strives to provide the world. Kingsbury thrust and journal bearings, from large, heavily loaded bearings over 100-inches in diameter for hydro-turbines; to small, very high speed bearings for carbon-capture compressors, are designed, tested, and manufactured to allow machine builders to extend the size, load, and speed of the equipment they build. This results in better, more efficient machines and processes, providing a positive, global impact.
Kingsbury bearings support and enable efficient machinery operations in applications from power generation, oil & gas, and dozens of other industrial rotating equipment applications. Kingsbury proudly provides main propulsion and various support systems bearings to the U.S. Navy and provides Messinger rolling element bearings for various military platforms. Kingsbury operates a continuously staffed R&D laboratory which tests and develops bearing designs, and is the basis for our ability to very accurately predict performance and provide troubleshooting and other application assistance for our customers. Kingsbury actively participates with machine designers and the large end users who are embracing more environmentally-conscious processes, and strives to offer materials and bearing design features that facilitate clean energy initiatives.
We enable superior machine performance through expert bearing solutions.
“We live and work in an increasingly competitive, global market, and the pace of business continues to
accelerate. At Kingsbury, we embrace that challenge, and bringing our knowledge, skills, and spirit to our
customers. ALL of that comes from our employees. We strive to hire the best, to train and educate them, and we
believe that a good work-life balance, with family as a priority, is important. With the full support of the
Kingsbury family, we aim to provide good benefits and compensation. We are proud to claim a retention rate and
average tenure that is well above average for our industry.
Despite the fact that we operate multiple plants and design, install, and service our products in every corner of the globe, we maintain that small company, family company feel. Recently, a young, relatively new employee approached me following a quarterly update meeting. He thanked me and spent about five minutes telling me why working for Kingsbury had been such a positive experience so far. He said he’d worked a few previous jobs and the biggest difference at Kingsbury was that people really cared about what they were doing, and the product they were helping to make. Thinking about it, then and now, that’s the one thing I’d like people to know about Kingsbury!!”
- Mike Brawley, President & CEO
current Chairman of the Board, appointed in July 2018, is Ms. Eve Clulow, great-granddaughter of the company’s
founder, Dr. Albert Kingsbury. Eve’s grandfather, businessman Quinto Maganini, succeeded Albert Kingsbury as the
company’s second president from 1943 until 1974. Eve’s mother, Margaretta Maganini Clulow, served as Chairman of the
Board from 1975 until 2006, when Dr. Joseph Hill (cousin-in-law to Eve) assumed the title.
One might say that Kingsbury, Inc. was Eve’s destiny from a young age. As a child, Eve often accompanied her mother to Kingsbury’s Philadelphia headquarters for board meetings and got to know many of the employees, several of whom are still with the company today. It was only a matter of time (1991, to be exact) before she joined the board of directors. Eve served as a board member for 27 years before being elected to her current position as Chairman.
Forging Company and Community Connections
Kingsbury employees enthusiastically embrace the company’s family culture. Every year we have several corporate and employee-hosted events. Many of these events and other activities result in, or include community service or donations, which are always matched by the Kingsbury family. Below are photo albums of our most recent celebrations. We hope you’ll enjoy browsing through them as much as we enjoyed creating them!
